A dog backpack carrier is a terrific method to carry along a small such as chihuahua to a medium-sized furry friend for a variety of reasons, such as keeping your hands free for errands or offering tired paws on long walks a comfortable perch. Dog backpacks come in a variety of forms that let your chihuahua rest in an upright position or lie down. Naturally, we also want to be able to see its cute head peeking out.
We evaluated fourteen of the best-selling and highest-performing dog backpacks. Everyone was sent home with a volunteer tester’s dog. Our human testers made meticulous notes while our canine subjects were being carried around. Our testers assessed each dog backpack based on predetermined criteria, including performance, quality, comfort, and overall value.
1. K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier

The K9 Sport Sack Plus 2 Dog Carrier will make it simple for you to take your Chihuahua on trips if it is at ease standing up. There are three sizes available for the backpack, so it can fit dogs from eight to forty pounds. To ensure the proper fit, measure your chihuahua from the base of their tail to the collar using the length standards provided in the sizing chart
Our tester’s elderly dog weighs less than thirty pounds and has joint problems, but once it was in the backpack, it seemed comfortable going for walks with its owner.
A dog’s head and front legs will stay exposed for paw shakes, high fives, and snoot boops after it is safely within the backpack. Small mesh pockets on the sides allow for ventilation, and a cushioned back panel keeps your chihuahua cool. The bag has a padded back panel and wide, pressure-relieving straps for human comfort. However, our tester discovered that evenly dispersing the weight of a larger dog was a little tricky; it required a few strap changes before they were able to find a comfortable setup.
A 14 by 9-inch removable storage bag is also included with the K9 Sport Sack to hold extras like food, keys, a collapsible water bowl, and more.
2. Kurgo Nomad Carrier Backpack
Small dogs under 15 pounds like your chihuahua can use the dual-purpose Kurgo Nomad Carrier Backpack, which has two sturdy, dual-carry handles and backpack straps that can be used as either a backpack or a carrier.
Kurgo Nomad backpacks have the advantage of having a traditional design that doesn’t instantly imply pet carriers. With the ability to open and close the compartment completely or merely leave space for your dog’s snout to protrude, its roomy rear panel provides your dog with multiple options for how to travel. To hold it in place, you can fasten the internal tether to your dog’s collar.
Waterproof fabric lines the Kurgo’s interior, and the machine-washable inner pad accommodates your dog’s seat may be taken out. The DWR covering on the outside makes it equally water-resistant, so the next time you and your chihuahua get caught in a deluge, they should stay dry. The Kurgo Nomad boasts an inside tablet sleeve in addition to its exterior pockets, which include two side stow bags and a sizable, zippered front compartment.
The bag has ventilation panels on each side and a waterproof bottom. You can zip the main compartment completely shut or open a second mesh panel for more ventilation thanks to the two separate zippers in the compartment. Although we valued the various ventilation options, our tester found that the mesh was a bit too sturdy to provide optimal airflow.
3. Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack
This durable dog backpack will let you both enjoy the outdoors while giving your dog a place to rest as you carry on with your walk. The Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack’s lightweight design thrilled our tester, and their elderly toy poodle had lots of room to unwind.
Your dog will be able to feel the breeze on its little hairy body thanks to the mesh sides and top, which will keep it cool. Additionally, each mesh panel can be unzipped to allow your dog to peek out, and the backpack has an internal clip that fastens to a collar or harness to keep your dog safely within. Thick, padded straps that are attached to a waist and sternum strap will help the wearer of the dog backpack distribute their dog’s weight and relieve strain on their back.
This dog backpack’s sturdy design provides a haven for your pet, but because it takes up more room, you might find it harder to store.
Size Recommendation: Up to 25 pounds | Colors: Black, Gray, Pink, Blue, Navy | Exterior Dimensions: 16.8 x 11.4 X 12.6 inches
4. Kurgo G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack
The Kurgo G-Train Dog Carrier Backpack is made with fabric that is waterproof and dirt-resistant, and it has a solid base, reflective stripes, and a reflective interior. It is ideal for taking your chihuahua on outdoor adventures.
A strap at the sternum and hip that may be adjusted, as well as padded shoulder straps, provide support and relieve pressure. Nonetheless, the backpack is made to face the dog and the user in different directions when it is worn. This feature of the backpack gave our tester the impression that their dog’s weight was also slipping away. Two extra stabilizer rods are included with the carrier; however, placing them inside somewhat decreases the interior room, and our tester found installation to be challenging.
In addition to compact pockets that make it simple to access items you want to keep on hand, such as water bottles or snacks, mesh on both sides allows for ventilation. There are loops on the outside for attaching various goods, and an internal padded pouch may hold a laptop.
Because of its cross-body form, this carrier is ideal for tiny chihuahuas that can be nervous because it keeps your pet close at hand. It provides you with the hands-free sensation of a backpack while equally distributing the dog’s weight more than a shoulder bag.
For their 12-pound dog, our tester chose the YUDODO Reflective Pet Sling Carrier in the medium size. She thought it provided enough room to keep her dog safe and secure without feeling confined.
The drawstring opening, breathable mesh construction, and lightweight design of the sling allow it to weigh less than one pound on its own. The movable strap features a roomy buckle fastening and a smartphone-specific pocket. When taking walks and running errands with her dog in the sling and her toddler in a stroller, our tester—who also has a baby at home—found the sling to be incredibly comfortable and practical.
6. Mr. Peanut’s Aspen Series Airline-Approved Backpack Pet Carrier
The Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Pet Backpack can simplify your travel to and from the airport. The removable fleece pad and extra storage pockets were quite practical for everyday use and vacation. Although the bag is intended for use as a pet carrier on commercial flights, you should always make sure before you travel to the airport by checking with your airline provider.
Breathable mesh is featured on the top, front, and sides of the backpack. All four sections of the mesh may be unzipped for visibility and accessibility. Although our tester thought the padded, adjustable shoulder straps were pleasant, he or she thought the backpack would feel more secure with a sternum strap. It is also conveniently foldable for storage.
Recommendation: Up to 14 inches long and 9 inches tall; up to 16 pounds | Color: Gray | Exterior Dimensions: 18 x 14 x 9 inches
The Lion’s Den Dog Backpack Carrier by Morik has an attractive design that is lightweight, strong, and useful. We tested it with an eight-pound Pomeranian and found that it was comfortable and convenient to carry as a front pack, allowing us to keep our hands free and our dog tester in full view. The adjustable waist strap provides an additional layer of much-needed stability and support for the wearer’s back, and the padded straps are well-positioned to provide you and your dog with an enjoyable one.
The top part slides up and closes to allow your dog to enter via a zipper beneath the mane. After your dog is situated, there’s a sturdy, padded platform with soft fleece on one side and nylon fabric on the other, along with a leash tether connection. When the lion’s mane section is unzipped, the pattern reveals the head of a dog. You may adjust the size of this aperture to ensure that it fits your dog’s neck most securely thanks to an integrated toggle cord that is wrapped in soft fabric. The carrier has mesh panels on both sides for ventilation and elastic-rimmed pockets on both sides that have enough room to safely store a water bowl that collapses and a leash. With every purchase, Morik includes a bright yellow foldable water bowl; nevertheless, we discovered that it was a little too big for our small dog.
We strongly advise measuring your dog’s height while they are seated as well as their current weight to choose the proper size. Dogs weighing up to 10 pounds should use the medium size. While dogs weighing up to 20 pounds should use the large. Although the lion’s ears, tail, and legs are soft and cuddly, your dog who enjoys chewing will probably find these details too tempting.
| Size Recommendation: Up to 10 pounds (medium); up to 20 pounds (large) | Colors: Black, yellow | Exterior Dimensions: 13 x 8 x 14 inches (medium); 14 x 8 x 16 inches (large)
